First let me caveat the entire review by saying that these are the only Forstner bits that I have used, and so far I have only used them on soft wood. The case is nice if you intend to hang it on the wall, otherwise the wooden box that some other sets come with would probably be more practical. Strangely, the hinge is on the short side, so it takes up a lot of bench space when you open it. From visual inspection, the bits seem to be fairly sharp and cut with moderate precision. Using them on my cheap drill press at the lowest speed setting they seem to drill ok. They drill noticeably slower than a spade bit, but produce a much higher quality hole and without the vibration of a spade bit. On the smaller bits, I would sometimes need to stop drilling because the flutes became packed shut with wood chips and halted the drilling process. It was also nearly impossible to drill precisely concentric circles of different sizes because the pilot point is so short, but I think all Forstner bits would have this problem. I suspect that the bits might need to be sharpened more for use with hardwoods. At least the bits are of good enough quality that sharpening them more might be a worthwhile endeavor (unlike the horror stories I read about some other sets)

From 1/4" inch, up through the standard 2 1/8" lockset size, an absolute necessity for anyone developing their wood shop. The cutters are very well made, and the see thru case, with a handle even, rounds out an excellent value. It's too easy to loose track of single cutters .. the case is always easy to find. I shopped around, including a couple of my favorite haunts .. Woodcraft and Highland .. this is as good as it gets. You don't need Carbide, unless you are doing hardwoods on a CNC. The hexagonal shafts are the bees' knees .. never any chuck slippage. Highly recommended.
